UPDATE: RSM Man Shot After Motorcycle Chase

The suspect is in stable condition at a local hospital, police say.

A Rancho Santa Margarita man, shot Saturday afternoon by a deputy after a high-speed motorcycle chase, was in the hospital in stable condition, an Orange County Sheriff's Department spokesman said Saturday evening.

The shooting happened in the 30000 block of Meadow Park Lane, where investigators from the Orange County District Attorney's Office were interviewing neighbors and potential witnesses. The motorcyclist was believed to be in his early 20s.

Sheriff's deputies had cordoned off the entire cul-de-sac of Meadow Park Lane from before the intersection on Robinson Ranch Road and at Raintree.

OCSD spokesman Sgt. Jason Park said a Rancho Santa Margarita motorcycle deputy attempted to pull the man over for speeding, but that the man refused to yield to the deputy and led him on a high-speed chase.

The deputy lost the suspect, but recognized him and knew where he lived from prior contact with police, Park said. The nature of that prior contact was unclear.

Park Saturday evening said investigators had not yet interviewed the deputy.

The motorcycle deputy approached the house and had some undisclosed interaction with the suspect, which led him to fire his weapon at the man in front of his house.

A witness told the Orange County Register he saw the man lying in the road in the area of Robinson Ranch Road and Meadow Park Lane. He said his wife heard five shots. Those who knew the family also told that paper that the man who was wounded was Dennis Mitchell Mueller, 20.

Neighbors told Patch that he often sped through the neighborhood on his motorcycle.
