Football: Santa Margarita 72, Carson 0

Unbelievable. That was the only description for Santa Margarita Catholic’s nonleague victory Friday over Carson.

Against a program that had been one of the premier football outfits in the Los Angeles City Section, Santa Margarita rolled like the ocean.

They were unstoppable. They scored 65 points.

In the first half.

By the time it ended, mercifully with a running clock throughout the third and fourth quarter, the Eagles had scored a 72-0 victory behind Ryan Wolpin's school record six touchdowns.

Santa Margarita improved to 4-0 and Carson dropped to 0-4, which includes a 48-13 loss to Mater Dei last week and a 42-26 setback to Long Beach Poly.

In Carson Palmer’s senior season, 1997, Santa Margarita beat Corona del Mar 63-0. That had been the previous record for most points in a game, but when Ryan Wolpin scored on a 35-yard run 51 seconds before halftime, the Eagles had carved another entry into their record book.

It was Wolpin’s fifth touchdown and it broke the record held by 10 other players.

Just as unbelievable, the first team offense and defense for Santa Margarita came out for the first two series of the second half. Stanton and Wolpin were replaced on the first two plays of the second possession, allowing them a nice ovation from fans as they came off the field.

Wolpin scored on the Eagles' first possession, a 50-yard run, to make it 72-0.

Wolpin scored in the first half on runs of 10, 4, 11, 8 and 35 yards. He finished with 15 carries for 164 yards.

Johnny Stanton was equally impressive in the first half. He completed 13 of 15 passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns, of 31 and 22 yards to River Cracraft.

Leading 49-0, the Eagles’ defense forced a punt that was snapped out of the back of the end zone for a safety, and then R.J. Mazolewski returned the free kick 61 yards for a 58-0 lead with 3:16 to play in the first half.

With a 72-0 cushion late in the fourth quarter and Carson driving against "junior varsity players," according to coach Harry Welch, the Eagles inserted their first team defense into the game for a goal-line stand. Connor O'Brien, Mazolewski and Co., came through as they held on four downs inside the five-yard line to preserve Santa Margarita's second shutout in a row.

The Eagles defeated Trabuco Hills last week, 55-0, in a game they led at halftime, 35-0.

There won't be any running clock when the Eagles play next week. They face Ventura St. Bonaventure at Saddleback College on Friday.
