Former Olympic gold medalist Peter Vidmar was the keynote speaker during opening ceremonies Saturday for the Rancho Santa Margarita Relay For Life at Central Park.
The local resident talked about the challenges he faced as an aspiring Olympian, and how it paled to the challenges faced by those trying to wipe out cancer.
On the same stage that Vidmar spoke, Javier Alvarez Palomar created an original artwork in just a few minutes that sold for auction afterward for $1,000 to Michael Vaughn, counsel for Applied Medical—the city's largest employer.

We'll raffle it at Applied," Vaughn said afterward. "That way it keeps on giving. It's an opportunity to raise additional funds to give back to the community."
With Beatles tunes playing in the background, Palomar created an image of John Lennon in the span of about three songs.
