RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, CA — Great teachers matter. In Rancho Santa Margarita, we’re fortunate to have teachers like Christopher Johnston.

What does this person teach?

Chris is a tutor and mentor in the after-school Parentis Foundation reading program at the Boys and Girls Club.

Why do you believe the teacher should be recognized or honored?

Chris works one-on-one with students in a structured reading process increasing reading fluency, accuracy, and good expression. With a warm sense of humor and encouragement, Chris reinforces good reading skills. Students love to work with "Mr. Chris." Stumble on a difficult word? Mr. Chris is apt to exclaim, "What an awesome word! Let's highlight that one so we don't forget it." He makes practicing normal and fun, and readily celebrates student improvement. After school tutors such as Chris support teachers in the classroom, working in partnership to increase student success.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the teacher?

A retiree, Chris has found that volunteering with the Parentis Foundation makes a positive difference not just for his students, but they make an important difference for him.
