A summer fellowship program on data science will be offered through a partnership of six HSI Institutions that includes CSUSB. A virtual information session for the fellowship will be held on Friday, March 11, from noon-1 p.m. on Zoom.

As part of a $1.5 million National Science Foundation grant to prepare the next generation of data scientists in the Inland Empire, a summer fellowship program will be offered through a partnership of six Hispanic Serving-Institutions that includes Cal State San Bernardino.
The 10-week Data Science Summer Camp for undergraduates and graduate students, which includes a $5,000 stipend supported by the NSF, is part of the Data Science Career Pathways in the Inland Empire Grant, which aims to create flexible pathways for data science education in the inland region, said Yunfei Hou, an associate professor in the CSUSB School of Computer Science and Engineering.

The three-year NSF grant will also work to provide students with practical and first-hand learning opportunities, develop a community of partners to provide local, tangible and impactful data science projects, and broaden and increase the participation of women and underrepresented minorities in data science, said Hou, who serves as the principal investigator of the grant at CSUSB.
“The DS-PATH partnership will help to broaden participation in the data science-enabled fields through community partnerships, internships and fellowship programs,” said Hou. “The DS-PATH program will create a pipeline that starts with outreach opportunities at the high school level, continues with undergraduate experiences and innovative bridge pathways from other majors, and culminates in professional master’s degrees.”

The NSF grant HSI partners, along with CSUSB, also includes the University of California, Riverside, San Bernardino Valley College, Riverside City College, Moreno Valley College and Norco College. UC Riverside serves as the lead institution.
Serving alongside Hou as co-investigators at CSUSB are associate professor Qingquan Sun and assistant professor Ronald Salloum, both of the School of Computer Science and Engineering; and associate professor Jeremy Aikin and assistant professor Hani Aldirawi, both of the mathematics department.
