Top 5 Redlands-Area Stories: Dorner Police Victims from Redlands, Bus Crash Investigation

Tragedy struck Redlands this week in a very personal way following the announcement that the officer shot fatally during the Christopher Dorner manhunt turned out to be a resident in the city. From that connection to the geographic closeness of the manhunt itself, there is no question where to begin with the Top Five Redland Patch stories this week.
- A make-shift memorial at the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department Yucaipa station had co-workers, friends and other loved ones of slain officer Jeremiah Mackay showing up with flowers, memories and more. David Clayton Ward, of Yucaipa, told Redlands-Loma Linda Patch this about MacKay: "I truly appreciated this fine officer...he came to help me out at my house last week, and he spent a whole hour speaking to me and talking to me, assuring me they'll be doing the very best job."
- The shoot-out itself was a big story for everybody in the area... for those who may not have followed the day's event moment by moment, here is our updated breaking news bulletins from throughout the day as Dorner was spotted, surrounded and met his death following a shoot-out with law enforcement.
- The other police officer who died at the hands of Dorner last week, Redlands high school graduate Mike Crain, was remembered at his funeral service Thursday, an event that drew attendees from all over the Inland Empire.
- The Redlands Police Department used an 18-year-old girl in a sting operation to target liquor stores selling to underage customers. Four businesses were cited.
- The Department of Transportation announced Thursday.federal officials will undertake a safety crackdown on high-risk motorcoach companies, a move that came as a result of a deadly bus crash on State Route 38 that took place on Super Bowl Sunday.
