Beach Replenishment Project Wraps Up

Redondo Beach and Los Angeles County have wrapped up the beach replenishment project that brought about 73,000 cubic yards of sand onto to the beach near the Topaz Jetty in South Redondo Beach, according to a post on the city website.

The replenishment began in August when a barge carrying hundreds of thousands of cubic yards of clean sand dredged from Marina del Rey pumped sand onto the beach between Topaz and Ruby streets.

Besides the sand pumped onto the beach, an additional 85,000 cubic yards was stored in a pit offshore from the Topaz Street jetty for future replenishment projects.

City officials expected the project to be complete by Monday and demobilized by Oct. 22, according to the notice. It was delayed and modified due to beach erosion from high surf in September and a catastrophic pump failure on Labor Day.
