City to Finish Counting Ballots Monday

The city of Redondo Beach will finish at 2 p.m. Monday tallying the provisional and vote-by-mail ballots cast in Tuesday's election, according to City Clerk Eleanor Manzano.

According to Manzano, approximately 1,600 provisional and vote-by-mail ballots remained to be verified and tallied on Tuesday night. Since then, volunteers and city staff have worked to verify those ballots so they can be included in the official tally.

The uncounted ballots will decide the fate of Measure A, as well as who will participate in the runoff races for mayor and City Council Districts 1 and 4.

Right now, Measure A is losing by a 383-vote margin, with about 1,600 votes left to be verified and counted. Termed-out Councilman Steve Aspel, who has received 39.7 percent of the vote so far, will probably face current Councilman Matt Kilroy in the mayoral race; however, current Councilman Pat Aust could conceivably close the 725-vote margin to take Kilroy's place.

Jeff Ginsburg will be in the runoff for City Council District 1, and only 104 votes separate Jim Light (28.5 percent of the vote so far) and Kimberly Fine (24.6 percent) for the second-place finish. About 360 vote-by-mail and provisional ballots remain to be counted in District 1.

Only 72 votes separate second-place vote-getter Jan Jeffreys from third-place vote-getter Julian Stern in the race for City Council District 4 with about 260 ballots remaining to be counted. One of them will face Stephen Sammarco in the runoff for District 4.
