Drop off Drugs on 'Take Back Day'

On National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, residents can anonymously drop off their expired or unused medications.

South Bay residents can take their unused and unwanted prescription drugs to various locations throughout the area Saturday as part of the federal Drug Enforcement Administration's National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

Those who want to drop off prescription drugs can visit these locations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The program is free and anonymous, and prescription and over-the-counter drugs will be accepted.

Collectors will not accept intravenous solutions, injectables, needles or illicit drugs like methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana.

The day is meant to address "a vital public safety and public health issue," according to the Take Back website.

More than 7 million Americans currently abuse prescription drugs, according to the 2009 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's National Survey on Drug Use and Health. The Partnership for a Drug Free America said each day, approximately 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time.
