Interactive Identifies Energy Guzzlers

Southern California Edison's interactive graphic helps consumers identify which appliances use the most energy.

Redondo Beach residents can save money by identifying energy guzzlers in their home, according to Southern California Edison.

On its website, the utility posted an interactive graphic where people can learn how much money per month they can save by turning an appliance off or replacing it with a more efficient model.

For example, an evaporative cooler costs about 17 cents per kWh to run; when run for 8 hours per day, every day for 30 days, it would cost a homeowner about $23.14. To save money, a homeowner can keep a window open while the cooler runs; clean and replace the filters frequently; and refrain from running the air conditioning and the cooler at the same time.

Homeowners with flat screen televisions pay an average of $13.24 per month when the TV is on for 8 hours every day. To save money, a person shopping for a TV should look at Energy Star-certified models.

In addition to the two mentioned above, Edison's interactive includes eight other energy guzzlers.
