Land Swap Won't Include Edison Site

The school district has dropped the home of the South Bay Adult School from discussions about a land swap.

The and the city will no longer include the Edison School site in negotiations about a potential land swap, the district announced in a news release Monday morning.

"The parties have negotiated in good faith," the statement read. "Based on information gathered, the District has determined not to include the site in any further discussions with the City on property exchanges."

The Edison School site at 3401 Inglewood Ave., which currently hosts the South Bay Adult School, was perhaps the most controversial part of the memorandum of understanding signed in June of this year.

The memorandum proposed that the Edison School site and the property on Pacific Coast Highway next to be given to the city in exchange for the Franklin School site.

Though the school district owns all three properties, the city currently holds a long-term lease on the Franklin site.

If the land swap went through, the city planned to use the Edison site for high-density affordable housing.

The Franklin School site, located at 750 Inglewood Ave., currently houses a preschool and the . If the land swap occurred, the school district planned to move the Adult School to the Franklin site.

Nevertheless, residents expressed concern about bringing high-density housing to the area around the Edison site, parking and traffic issues surrounding the Franklin site, and whether it was legal to use Measure C funds to improve the Adult School if it were moved to the Franklin site.

According to the district's statement, it plans to ask the city to develop a new memorandum of understanding to address a possible land swap between 200 N. Pacific Coast Highway—the home of the Redondo Beach Police Department's investigations bureau—and the Franklin site.
