Letter: Keep Pier Parking Rates Low

To whom it may concern:

As a 48-year resident of Redondo Beach, I am very disappointed in how the council has approached the parking issue. The pier is not an income stream for the city other than revenue from sales taxes, vendor fees and licenses that pay for the administrative support and maintenance to keep the Pier in good condition for the public to enjoy. The parking fees should go down year over year and only be used for maintenance or pier renovations and not for general fund use.

The council’s job as it relates to the Redondo Pier parking fees is to determine the amount of funds required to operate the Pier and minimize the cost to the public to access the Pier—not to spend money on costly new technology that needs lots of maintenance and increases the cost to run the parking overall. Have you ever heard the term KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid)? It applies here.

Again, the Redondo Beach Pier is not a city revenue stream. It is a place for families to gather and enjoy what our predecessors left for us. Repeal the cost increase and go back to the drawing board and figure out how to make it less costly to visit the Pier.
