Letter: Why No Dogs at Turkey Trot?

Joelle Adkins wonders why dogs are no longer allowed to participate in Torrance's annual Turkey Trot.

Dear Turkey Trot organizers,

Every year since we've lived in the South Bay (1992), if we are in town on Thanksgiving day, my family gets up early and walks or runs in the Torrance Turkey Trot. We have invited numerous guests to join us over the years; some became loyal turkey trotters like us. We love this tradition.

Six years ago, our "family" grew: We adopted a dog. "Sulu" has since been a part of our tradition. Because of his size (he only weighs nine pounds), I carry him in a backpack for the first kilometer, so he is safe and everyone can run/walk safely when the crowd is thick. Then he trots next to me, proud and happy. Some bigger dogs pass us, we pass some. Never do I feel unsafe.

In just found out that little Sulu is no longer welcome to the Turkey Trot. I cannot even remotely figure out why—safety and sanitation? Are we talking about the same event?

My understanding is that this is a family event. Well, my family includes my dog. This new restriction makes no sense.

I will not participate without my whole family, and invite all my friends to follow me in my decision.
