Mistrial Declared in Fatal Collision Case
A jury deadlocks on a misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter charge against Edwin Roberts in the death of Redondo Beach resident Melania Nuhbegovic.

Redondo Beach prosecutors will seek a retrial on a vehicular manslaughter charge in the case of an off-duty Lomita sheriff's deputy who ran over and killed an elderly woman in Redondo Beach on July 4, 2011, according to the Beach Reporter.
Though Edwin Roberts was found guilty of "violating an infraction that requires drivers to exercise due care when approaching pedestrians in a crosswalk," the jury was deadlocked 9 to 3 in favor of conviction on the manslaughter charge after two days of deliberations, according to reporter Larry Altman.
Roberts is accused of not paying attention to the road when his pickup truck struck Redondo Beach resident Melania Nuhbegovic, 86, in a crosswalk at the intersection of Avenue C and the Esplanade on July 4, 2011.

Nuhbegovic died of her injuries at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.
Roberts' defense maintained that it was an accident. He was not immediately arrested or cited following the collision, according to police, he stopped and tried to help Nuhbegovic after his truck hit her. He did not appear to be under the influence of anything.

A new court date was scheduled for May 23.
