National Reps Brought In To Help Redondo Beach Firefighters Union Restructure

The representatives were brought to help the union restructure following the resignation of its entire board of directors.

REDONDO BEACH, CA -- The national representatives of the union representing Redondo Beach firefighters was brought in this week to oversee a special election appointing new board members amid an ongoing criminal investigation against its ex-president, the Daily Breeze reported.

It's unusual for the national union to get involved in local matters, but because the union currently lack a formal board of directions, the International Association of Fire Fighters stepped in to help members with restructuring, according to the Daily Breeze.

The entire board of Redondo Beach Firefighters Association resigned two weeks ago after news that its President Bradley Sweatt allegedly embezzled more than $19,000 from the union's treasury from 2013 to 2016.

“This ultimately is an internal financial matter that has no impact whatsoever on the public safety of the citizens and businesses of Redondo Beach,” District representative Frank Lima told the Daily Breeze in an email. “As the District Attorney examines this issue, the Redondo Beach professional firefighters association will stay focused on its mission of keeping the people of Redondo Beach safe.”

A new election could take place as early as two weeks, according to the Daily Breeze.
