The news magazine calculates its scores based on a school's graduation rate, college matriculation rate, number of Advanced Placement courses taken per student, average SAT/ACT scores, average AP score and the number of AP courses offered.

Redondo Union has a graduation rate of 97 percent, and 99 percent of those students attend college the fall after graduation. The school has a 31 to 1 student to teacher ratio, and the average SAT score is 1642.

Palos Verdes Peninsula High School, ranked No. 60, and South Torrance, ranked No. 320, were the only other South Bay high schools on Newsweek's list.

The Washington Post's list, which only looked at the ratio of AP and IB tests taken per graduating student, ranked Redondo Union at No. 611, with an average of 2.273 AP tests per student.

Local high schools El Segundo (No. 1534), Mira Costa (No. 416) and Palos Verdes (No. 305) also made the Washington Post's list. Though it's not online due to an oversight by the reporter, Peninsula High School ranked within the top 200 schools, according to the Daily Breeze.
