No Change in Election Results After Provisional Ballot Count

Despite a strong performance among the provisional and vote-by-mail ballots counted Monday, Measure A did not garner enough votes to pass.

Nevertheless, the gap between the yea and nay votes for the ballot measure—designed to phase out the AES Redondo Beach power plant by rezoning the land to a mixture of up to 40 percent commercial and institutional uses, leaving the remaining land parkland and open space—narrowed from 383 votes to 257.

In all, votes in favor of Measure A amounted to 48.9 percent of ballots cast, compared to 51 percent against.

Monday's count also determined that Councilmen Steve Aspel and Matt Kilroy will face each other in a runoff for mayor; businessman Jeff Ginsburg and activist Jim Light will compete for the District 1 seat on the city council; and businessman Steve Sammarco and library commissioner Jan Jeffreys will face off for District 4.

The runoff will take place May 14, the same day as the election for Redondo Beach City Treasurer. Former Councilman Chris Cagle, Councilman Steve Diels and activist Dawn Esser are in the running for that post.
