No Local Post Offices on Closure List
The U.S. Postal Service targets more than 3,600 post offices for closure.

None of the Redondo Beach branches of the Postal Service are being considered for closure, according to a list released Tuesday by Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe.
The Postal Service is targeting more than 3,600 of the nation's 32,000 post offices for closure. Many of the targeted post offices are in rural areas and don't make much money.
The advent of email has hit the Postal Service hard. Over the past four years, mail volume has dropped 20 percent.

"Today, more than 35 percent of the Postal Service’s retail revenue comes from expanded access locations such as grocery stores, drug stores, office supply stores, retail chains, self-service kiosks, ATMs and usps.com, open 24/7," Donahoe said in a news release. "Our customer’s habits have made it clear that they no longer require a physical post office to conduct most of their postal business."
Last year, the Postal Service lost $8 billion. In addition to laying off workers and closing locations, it has asked Congress to allow it to eliminate Saturday delivery.

Of the locations to be examined, not all will be closed. In January, the Postal Service said it would review 1,400 for closing; of those, 280 were closed, 200 will remain open, 620 are still in the review process and 300 were moved to the most recent list, according to the Huffington Post.
According to an article in the Washington Post, the Postal Service will have a 60-day comment period before a final decision is made. Any decision can be appealed to the Postal Regulatory Commission.
In 2009, the on Artesia Boulevard and the in the were both on a list of post offices targeted for closure. After intense lobbying from the city and then-Rep. Jane Harman, the Postal Service opted to keep both locations open.
