Police ID Bee Attack Victim

Louis Todero, 95, is still in the hospital after being stung more than 400 times, police say.

Police identified the man by bees Wednesday afternoon as 95-year-old Louis Todero, City News Service reported on Thursday.

Todero remained hospitalized overnight and through Thursday morning, police spokesman Sgt. Phil Keenan said.

“He's a remarkable man,” his daughter, Louise Todero, told ABC7. “He got stung all over his neck, his arms and his eyes. But he's doing fine. He's just lucky to still be here.”

The bees were angered when an exterminator tried to remove their hive from a second-story attic in an apartment building near the corner of Ruxton and Rockefeller lanes. They attacked Todero as he was walking down the street.

The bees “went into his ears, the palms of his hands, his arms, his face, his neck—everything that was exposed,” Keenan said.

People on the street “tried to warn him, ‘Don't come. Don't come,’” Louise Todero told ABC7. “But I don't think he heard them even though he had his hearing aids in.”

The bees also stung the firefighters who rushed to the scene to render aid, Keenan said.

An exterminator tried to remove the bees Wednesday night, but decided not to because of all the people in the area, Keenan said.

“He was afraid the reporters might be exposed to another swarm,” he said.

The exterminator plans to finish the job Thursday night.

Investigators suspect the bees are Africanized honey bees, though this has not been confirmed.
