Updated: RBPD Finds Suspect Hiding Under Building

Police arrested a suspect on warrants after at least a two-hour search Sunday evening.

A suspect was taken into custody on suspicion of probation violation and resisting arrest Sunday evening after a police search, authorities said.

According to Sgt. Scott Wiebel, Redondo Beach police had set up a containment area for the suspect, identified as Torrance resident Richard Cal Allen, 29. A helicopter with the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department assisted with setting up the containment area.

"Officers found (Allen) in the containment (area), and he was taken into custody," Wiebel said. He later told Patch that Allen "had crawled (underneath an apartment building) using one of those crawl spaces."

A police dog found Allen hiding under the building in the 2200 block of Mathews Avenue, according to Sgt. Shawn Freeman.

WebTrak, which tracks air traffic in the Los Angeles area, indicated that the law-enforcement helicopter was circling the vicinity of Vail Avenue and Artesia Boulevard from about 5-7 p.m. Sunday.

The search began at about 3:30 p.m. after someone reported seeing a man matching Allen's description was tampering with a car on Artesia Boulevard, Freeman confirmed. Allen was arrested at about 8 p.m.

The Daily Breeze reported that Allen was on probation after pleading no contest to possession of a controlled substance and a hypodermic needle or syringe in May 2012. If his probation is violated, he could face 4 years in prison.
