REDONDO BEACH, CA — Angelenos were advised against swimming in Los Angeles County beaches after recent rains, including Redondo Beach's coastline.

Storm drain discharge possibly contaminated beaches, making water activities like swimming, surfing and playing in the ocean unsafe, according to the Los Angeles County Public Health Department. Rain advisories generally last for 72 hours after rain ends, so Monday's warning was expected to last through 7:30 a.m. Thursday.

"Ocean and bay recreational waters, especially near discharging storm drains, creeks and rivers can be contaminated with bacteria, chemicals, debris, trash, and other public health hazards from city streets and mountain areas after a rain fall. Individuals who enter the water in these areas could become ill," the department said in a news release.
