Redondo Beach Crime: Phone Scam

The following information is from the Redondo Beach Police Department's Recent Law Enforcement Events news release covering reports received March 18 through Sunday.

Phone scam

Someone tried to scam an elderly woman in South Redondo Beach on the evening of March 20. According to police, this person, pretending to be a member of the woman's family, called her, pretended to be in distress and asked for $7,800.

The woman called all her family members to make sure they were OK. When she discovered they were, she called police to report the incident.

Hit-and-runs in South Redondo

Police responded to a hit-and-run report in the area of Pacific Coast Highway and Avenue C at about 11:15 p.m. Friday.

The culprit had fled before the officers arrived; however, a witness called about 15 minutes later to report seeing the driver near the intersection of the Esplanade and Avenue G.

Police pulled the vehicle over at the Esplanade and Avenue I and arrested the driver on suspicion of driving under the influence and hit-and-run. Further investigation revealed that the driver "most likely was involved" in an earlier hit-and-run near Torrance Boulevard and Catalina Avenue, police said.

Fight in North Redondo

Police are still trying to identify the instigator of a fight that occurred Saturday evening at Perry Park.

Officers were dispatched to the park at about 6 p.m. and found several people who sustained injuries in the fight, including one person who had to be transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

The person who started the fight fled before police arrived.
