Redondo Beach Elections: What's Next?

Though Tuesday night has come and gone, election season is only partway through in Redondo Beach.

Volunteers and the city clerk's office will continue to verify through Monday provisional ballots and vote-by-mail—previously known as absentee—ballots that were dropped off at polling places Tuesday. There are about 1,600 ballots that remain to be counted.

Those final ballots will be counted Monday starting at 2 p.m., according to City Clerk Eleanor Manzano. At that point, voters will find out the fate of Measure A, as well as who will participate in the runoff races for mayor and City Council Districts 1 and 4.

On May 14, Redondo Beach voters will head to the polls again for a special municipal election for city treasurer and the runoff elections for mayor and council.

Former Councilman Chris Cagle, current Councilman Steve Diels and activist Dawn Esser are in the race to finish out the term of former longtime City Treasurer Ernie O'Dell, who resigned last year. Because there were more than two years left on his term, the city charter dictates that Redondo Beach hold a special election to replace him.

If none of the three candidates earn the requisite 50 percent of the vote plus one, the top-two finishers in the treasurer's race will participate in a runoff, scheduled for July 23. If such a runoff is required, the election will probably be an all-mail vote, according to Manzano.
