REDONDO BEACH, CA — Redondo Beach resident Ron Kovic, whose autobiography was turned into an Academy Award-winning film with the same name, "Born on the Fourth of July," will be giving a reading of his new book at a Manhattan Beach bookstore Thursday.

Kovic, who was shot and paralyzed on the battlefields in Vietnam, will be reading selections from his new book, "Hurricane Street," which is about the 1974 sit-in and hunger strike in the office of then-U.S. Sen. Alan Cranston.

Kovic and other veterans was protesting for the 17 days about the conditions of the VA hospitals that were treating troops returning from Vietnam in the waning years of the war. This book was something the anti-war activist wanted to write for some time.
