Redondo Beach Waterfront Project Clears Hurdle, Receives Approval From Harbor Commission

The contested project will likely move the City Council for appeal.

REDONDO BEACH, CA — A controversial redevelopment project for the Redondo Beach waterfront cleared a major hurdle this week. The $300-million project was approved the Harbor Commission on Monday night.

In a 4-2 vote, the commission certified the environmental impact report, which would place the boat ramp at Mole B. The issue is a thorny one. The EIR was supposed to be voted on at the commission's last meeting in July but was moved to this month to give the commission more time to pore over the information.

At Monday's meeting, the debate over the ramp raged on for seven and a half hours — into the early morning hours Tuesday.

The next step would typically be a review by the California Coastal Commission, but based on the number of people opposing the project, it would likely be appealed to the Redondo Beach City Council.

Proposed renovations along the 15-acre project spanning the Redondo Beach Pier, International Boardwalk, Redondo Beach Marina and Pier Plaza include a high-end movie theater, several chain restaurants and a two-lane road connecting Torrance Boulevard to Harbor Drive.
