Redondo Union graduate Lara Dykstra, hairstylist Spencer Lebowitz and Renee Capizzi make this week's list.

Redondo Beach is full of interesting people, and while Patch tries to recognize everyone, some don't appear on our radar. Fortunately, we're not the only news organization out there. Check out this batch of newsmakers recently featured in local and national publications:
More Than 'Shear Genius'
Redondo Beach resident Spencer "Camouflage" Lebowitz, who has styled hair for Chicago on Broadway and numerous fashion shows, is trying something new: a reality television competition. As part of Oxygen's new reality show Hair Battle Spectacular, which premiered Monday, Lebowitz creates fantasy hair designs out of chicken wire and Styrofoam, among other materials, with help from syntheRtic and real hair, the Daily Breeze reported.

In the first episode, Lebowitz was nearly eliminated for his celebrity-inspired hairdo.

Redondo Union Volleyball Player Shines in Nebraska

Nebraska University freshman Lara Dykstra, who hails from Redondo Beach, is vying to replace star player Kayla Banwarth as NU's starting libero. Banwarth now plays with the U.S. National Team program, according to Husker Extra.
While at , Dykstra was named the Player of the Year for the All-CIF Division 1 girls' volleyball team.

Mike Gin Recognized as Good California Mayor
Last week, Capitol Weekly ran a story on its top 10 mayors in California, and Redondo Beach Mayor Mike Gin made the list. The publication called Gin "an intriguing up-and-coming career politician," and said that "if Republicans want to have a future in California … they should be promoting people like Gin."

Jeweler Molds Old Trinkets Into New
Renee Capizzi transforms old earrings into something "more modern … fun to wear and … affordable," she told the Daily Breeze.
A registered nurse, Capizzi runs Renee Vintage Jewelry out of her Redondo Beach home. Her fashionable rings, necklaces and bracelet are unique in that the main components are at least 20 years old.

Redondo Resident Plays Extreme Golf
Redondo Beach real estate agent Howard Cohen spent nearly six hours playing in New Mexico's Elfego Baca Golf Shoot, the Easy Reader reported. It took him 25 strokes to make the first hole.
The first hole—a circle 50 feet in diameter that's three miles and 2,600 feet lower than the tee-off point—is also the only hole in this extreme competition, which is limited to 10 participants. Cohen finished fifth. He was the oldest competitor.
