Residents who want to dispose of household hazardous waste and universal waste should bring their items in a sturdy box, preferably in the original labeled containers. Items should not be mixed together, and residents should be prepared to leave their containers and boxes.

Universal waste includes household batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, mercury thermostats, needle syringes and expired medications. Products labeled toxic, poison, corrosive, flammable, combustible or irritant—including used motor oil and oil filters, brake fluid, paint, paint thinner, pesticides and car batteries—are considered household hazardous waste.

Explosives, ammunition, radioactive materials, household trash, tires and bulky items—including refrigerators, stoves, dishwashers, sofas and tables—will not be accepted. People who have bulky items can schedule a pickup with Athens Services by calling 888-336-6100.

Residents can bring a maximum of 15 gallons or 125 pounds of hazardous waste per trip. Business waste will not be accepted; however, businesses can call 213-485-2260 for an appointment to collect it.
