Smog Check Checkpoint Set Up In Redondo Beach

The California Department of Consumer Affairs Bureau of Automotive repair set up a "roadside emission study" checkpoint Monday in the eastbound lanes of Herondo Street in Redondo Beach.

The checkpoint, ehich was manned by a California Highway Patrol officer and Technicians from the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR), inspected vehicles to "evaluate the performance of California's emissions reduction programs," according to an information sheet handed out at the checkpoint.

"There are no consequences to you for participating regardless of your emission equipment or emission levels," the information sheet said. "Your cooperation in this roadside check is important and very helpful to us."

Although a CHP officer was waving cars into the checkpoint, representatives with the BAR said that participation in the checkpoint was completely voluntary and drivers had the option to opt out of the check.

According to the BAR, data gathered from the approximately 10-minute inspection will be used to evaluate the state's smog check program and hold smog check businesses accountable for the inspection certificates they hand out.

Drivers who participated in the checkpoint were provided with a copy of the inspection report for their vehicles.
