Solstice Marks Summer's Start

Tuesday is the longest day of the year, according to the U.S. Naval Observatory.

As the sun blazes above Hermosa Beach on Tuesday, it will have appeared to reach its highest point in the sky, marking this year's summer solstice.

The solstice marks the first day of summer, when the earth's tilt toward the sun is at a maximum. As a result, the sunlight will produce the longest day of the year.

On Tuesday, the sun is expected to rise at 5:43 a.m. and set at 8:08 p.m., according to the U.S. Naval Observatory.
