South Bay Baby Boy Dies and Police Want to Know Why

The baby was found unresponsive by his teenage mother and died at the hospital. The boy was under the care the mother's adoptive mother.

HAWTHORNE, CA - Authorities on Thursday identified a year-old Hawthorne boy who died at a hospital after being found unresponsive in his home.

Police were called to the 11700 block of Doty Avenue about 5 p.m. Wednesday, when the boy's mother, a 15-year-old high school student, returned home and found her son unresponsive, sheriff's Deputy Trina Schrader said.

Jeremiah Adams died at a hospital about a half-hour later, according to Schrader and the coroner's office. An autopsy was pending to determine his cause of death.

The toddler was being cared for by his mother's adoptive mother, Schrader said.

"There were no visible signs of trauma to the child," she said.

The sheriff's department was assisting Hawthorne police in the investigation. Anyone with information on the death was asked to call the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Tipsters can also call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS. All tips can be made anonymously.
