South Bay Postal Worker Stole Money For Years, Flaunted Cash On Instagram, Feds Say

The 31-year-old Carson woman was sentenced after pleading guilty, federal prosecutors say.

TORRANCE, CA — A former United States Postal Service letter carrier from the South Bay has been sentenced after she was accused of stealing checks, debit and credit cards from the mail over the course of three years and spending the funds on international trips and luxury goods, federal prosecutors say.

Mary Ann Magdamit, 31, of Carson, was sentenced to 63 months in federal prison, the U.S. Attorney's Office, Central District of California, said in a Monday news release. Magdamit was also ordered to pay $660,200 in restitution, prosecutors said.

Magdamit’s sentencing comes after she pleaded guilty Aug. 11 to one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud, prosecutors said.

An attorney for Magdamit did not immediately respond to Patch’s request for comment.

“Individuals, businesses, and governments rely on the Postal Service to deliver over 100 million pieces of first-class mail daily,” prosecutors argued in a sentencing memorandum. “Especially for the poorest Americans, who are often unbanked, they rely on the mail to deliver their government benefits in the form of Treasury checks or EDD debit cards, precisely what (Magdamit) chose to steal.”

During her time as a letter carrier at the Torrance Main Post Office, Magdamit is accused of stealing mail with “checks, personal identifying information (PII), and debit and credit cards” from 2022 to July 2025, prosecutors said.

“She then activated the stolen bank-issued cards online, used the cards to make purchases, and sold some stolen cards to her co-conspirators,” according to prosecutors.

Magdamit arranged with her co-conspirators to have the stolen checks cashed using counterfeit identity documents, prosecutors said.

When law enforcement searched Magdamit’s apartment in December 2024, prosecutors said they “seized 133 stolen credit and debit cards, 16 U.S. Department of Treasury checks, and a loaded, unserialized Glock-clone, with an extended 27-round magazine, commonly referred to as a ‘ghost gun.’”

Law enforcement also found luxury goods that Magdamit is accused of buying with the stolen credit cards, prosecutors said, adding that “she also used stolen cards on international trips she took to Turks and Caicos and Aruba.”

Magdamit was arrested on July 1, prosecutors said.

A second search of Magdamit’s apartment uncovered additional stolen credit cards, prosecutors said.

“Magdamit posted on Instagram her luxury purchases and vacations, and flaunted stacks of hundred-dollar bills,” prosecutors said.
