Summer Begins With Today's Solstice

Summer will officially arrive in Hermosa Beach and the northern hemisphere Wednesday afternoon.

Wednesday marks the Summer Solstice and the longest day of the year in terms of sunlight, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. 

From Wednesday onward, the northern hemisphere will slowly lose small amounts of daylight each day until the winter solstice in December.

According to the NOAA, the official summer solstice will occur at 4:08 p.m. in California.

Throughout history, the summer solstice was celebrated by multiple ancient cultures including the Egyptians, Mayans and Incas as the day marked an important point in the agricultural growing season, according to National Geographic.

In the South BAy, plenty of summer activities are coming up including the International Surf Festival, beach volleyball tournaments (including the infamous six-man tournament), summer concerts and Fourth of July celebrations.
