Redondo Beach Patch: Why are you running to represent Redondo Beach's District 2?

Susan Kowalski: I have spent a large portion of my adult life doing philanthropic work in the South Bay. I feel that with so much going on in our community, now is the time to redirect my efforts toward local politics.

Patch: In your opinion, what is the No. 1 issue facing District 2?

Kowalski: The waterfront project with CenterCal is the No. 1 issue in our district. With the over $200 million investment and the community working closely with the contractor, this project will breathe new life into our beautiful community. I think I would be the best person to represent District 2 with this project.

Patch: What is your position on AES' plans to repower its power plant on Harbor Drive?

Kowalski: I have yet to speak to a person who likes the sight of the AES smoke stacks on our city's skyline. I believe the California Energy Commission is doing studies now concerning the feasibility of rebuilding the power plant at that location. I believe that we should wait to see what the CEC's studies results are before we jump to any conclusions.

If the CEC study says we need the power plant, so be it. I have seen the AES proposal and it does not look bad.

If the CEC study concludes that we do not need the power plant then I would be delighted to be a participant in reasoning discussions.

Patch: What is your position on Measure A, the ballot initiative that would rezone the Harbor Drive property in hopes of preventing the construction of a new power plant?

Kowalski: I believe Measure A was drafted with good intentions; however, I do not support it.

After educating myself on the issues, I believe the measure is short-sighted.
That property is privately owned by AES. We cannot and should not be legislating what private property owners do with their property. The California Energy Commission can do their job. If they say "no power plant," then great. We can negotiate and not legislate how the private property on Harbor Drive is rezoned.

Patch: If elected, what are your top three priorities?

Kowalski:

  1. Waterfront development—Making our waterfront the best it can be for members of our community and those visiting Redondo Beach.
  2. Transportation—Specifically, using our existing public transportation as well as alternate (bike, walk) transportation to help reduce traffic, polution, and parking issues.
  3. Business Development—We have a number of unique shopping districts in both north and south Redondo. By using surveys, marketing, and interactivity with current and potential business owners, we can develop strategies to breathe more life into our business districts.

Patch: Share one specific example of demonstrating your leadership and execution skills.

Kowalski: A few years ago I was chairperson of an auction commitee. Sometimes committee work can be challenging because different individuals have different availabilities, skill sets, and work ethic.

I was able to identify the skill sets of the committee workers and maxamize their participation in the project. We had a very successful fundraiser, and the committee members were all happy.

This project, consisting of all volunteers, was especially challenging. My interpersonal skills were helpful in executing the event.

Patch: Why should people vote for you?

Kowalski: I LOVE Redondo Beach.

I listen to people.

I am a leader.

I am a very hard worker.

I am an independent business person.

Redondo Beach needs a woman's voice on City Council.

I have time and energy for our community.

Patch: Is there anything else you'd like to say?

Kowalski: "I see that I do not have as large a resume as my opponents. What I do have is heart. Lots of heart.

I am smart and promise to read up on issues and listen to my constituents . I will represent YOU!

I was voted "Sandpiper of the Year" for 2013-2014. This is an honor, and I am very proud (and humbled) to have been chosen for this prestigious position.
