Topaz Beach Replenishment Nears Completion

A project utilizing dredged sand from Marina del Rey to replenish the beach near the Topaz Street Jetty in Redondo Beach is nearing completion, the city announced last week.

Crews have been working since August to widen the beach between Topaz and Ruby streets by adding approximately 75,000 cubic yards of sand to the area. The dredging project also called for depositing another 85,000 cubic yards of sand into a storage pit located 500 yards offshore from the beach.

According to the city, the offshore portion of the project is nearly complete, which will now allow crews to focus on replenishing the beach.

The city also said that high surf during the first weekend of September caused some erosion at the beach and will ultimately affect replenishment efforts. Instead of grading the beach to plus 15 feet, crews will only be able to grade it to plus 13 feet.

Because of the beach erosion and a catastrophic pump failure on Labor Day, the city expects an October 5 project completion date.
