Water Warning Issued for Topaz Jetty

Beachgoers should avoid the water 50 yards north and south of the Topaz Street extension, health officials say.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health on Monday issued a warning to people who plan to head to the shore by the Topaz Jetty in Redondo Beach.

According to the department's website, beachgoers should avoid going into the water within 50 yards of the jetty in either direction because bacterial levels in a water quality sample exceeded state standards.

Nevertheless, the area 50 yards north of the Topaz Jetty received an A for its water quality over the past 30 days, according to the department.

The department issued 30-day grades of the water quality at three other spots on Redondo beaches. The sample taken 50 yards south of the received a B grade, while the samples taken in front of the Herondo Street storm drain and 50 yards north of the same storm drain received A's.

The 30-day grades are a reflection of the average grade of samples taken over the past month. With the exception of the area around the Topaz Jetty, all areas met state standards for water quality.
