Women Shot in Dorner Manhunt Get $4.2M Settlement

The Los Angeles City Council signed off today on a $4.2 million payout for two women newspaper deliverers injured by Los Angeles police officers who fired on their pickup in Torrance as they guarded a colleague's home during the manhunt for rogue ex-LAPD Officer Christopher Dorner.

The council voted 10-0 to pay Margie Carranza and her mother, Emma Hernandez, who reached a legal settlement with city attorneys in April.

The money will be split evenly between the two women, who filed claims for personal injuries, legal costs, medical bills and emotional damage.

In March, the City Attorney's Office agreed to pay the women $40,000 to replace the bullet-riddled pickup truck they were in.

The officers who fired on the blue Toyota Tacoma pickup early Feb. 7 mistook it for the gray Nissan Titan Dorner was driving.

Abot 100 bullets were fired at the Toyota Tacoma. Hernandez, 71, suffered two wounds to the back, and Carranza, 47, was cut by auto glass shattered by the gunfire.

The incident occurred several blocks from the Redondo Beach border.

City officials, at the bidding of police Chief Charlie Beck, initially tried to give the women a new pickup, but they rejected the idea when they learned they would be liable for about $10,000 in taxes.

Dorner killed four people, including a Riverside police officer, a San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy and the daughter of a former LAPD captain, during a rampage fueled by his anger over being fired from the LAPD several years ago.

After Dorner made public his manifesto, the LAPD deployed officers around the region to guard high-ranking officers that Dorner might target.

The body disgruntled ex-cop, who died from a self-inflicted shot to the head Feb. 12 after a weeklong manhunt, was found in a burned-out cabin in the San Bernardino County mountain community of Angelus Oaks, where he was cornered by law enforcement officers after being flushed out of a cabin in Big Bear.
