Express Lane Testing Begins On Highway 101 In Redwood City

REDWOOD CITY, CA — Express lanes along Highway 101 in Redwood City will open soon and testing is currently taking place as part of the San Mateo 101 Express Lane Project.

The HOV lanes from the San Mateo/Santa Clara County line to Whipple Avenue will have “toll testing” banners above them, and there will be no charge to use them until the express lanes open.

The express lanes will be free for vehicles with three or more people, half price for two people and some clean air vehicles and a vehicle with one person would be charged a toll.

Caltrans has adjusted the lane striping and pavement markings in the HOV lanes, replacing the diamond shape with the letters “EXPRS LANE."

The change to express lanes was designed to move more people through the Highway 101 corridor while prioritizing carpools, according to Caltrans.

The end result of the project will be 22 miles of express lanes in each direction of Highway 101.
