Man Sentenced For Bank Robbery In San Mateo County

A man who passed a note to tellers at a local bank was sentenced in court.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — A man who pretended to have a gun and passed a note to a teller demanding money at a Redwood City bank back in June was sentenced to six years in prison, prosecutors announced Tuesday.

Arthur Burton Gillespie, 66, who pleaded no contest to felony bank robbery, was sentenced to six years in prison, the San Mateo County District Attorney's office said on Tuesday.

On June 24, Gillespie entered the Chase Bank at 2300 Broadway in Redwood City and handed a note to the teller. Bank employees activated the silent alarm, which led to a significant law enforcement response, according to police.

Following the robbery, officers reported that Gillespie sat in the bank's lounge area. The bank was subsequently evacuated, and Gillespie voluntarily exited, where he was arrested by police without incident.

He told officers that he needed money to travel to Boston, prosecutors said.
