Parks Commission Champions Equity And Engagement In New Work Plan In Redwood City
City Council approved a parks strategy emphasizing equitable access, neighborhood outreach and sustainable growth with a unanimous vote.
REDWOOD CITY, CA — City council unanimously approved the parks commission plans to emphasize enhanced equity in park amenities and expanded community engagement throughout local neighborhoods they said on Monday at the Redwood City Council meeting.
Redwood City’s Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Commission presented an ambitious work plan for fiscal years 2025–2027.
The plan, introduced by Parks Assistant Director Lucas Wilder, emphasizes enhanced equity in park amenities and expanded community engagement throughout local neighborhoods.

During their presentation, Wilder highlighted recent achievements, including pilot audits to measure the equitable distribution of park facilities across the city, and the development of new sustainability criteria.
The Parks Commission also detailed their outreach, with efforts ranging from partnerships with neighborhood associations to regular off-site meetings designed to boost engagement and gather resident input.

"I think parks have such a special place in our city because they touch our entire community, and I'm so grateful because I think that is incorporated in your entire work plan," said Council member Marcella Padilla.
Other council members echoed support for the commission’s work improving access and innovation.
Following the discussion, the council unanimously approved the work plan.
They also encouraged the commission to make sure their priorities align with the city’s developing Greater Downtown Area Plan, ensuring cohesive urban growth.
