Redwood City PD Gets $100K For Traffic Safety Programs

The latest state grant will help expand traffic safety programs and enforcement in the months to come.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — A $100,000 grant from the state will help fund the Redwood City Police Department's traffic safety over the next year, officials announced Tuesday.

The grant comes from the state Office of Traffic Safety, which distributes funds available through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Police officials said the money will help support work on both the enforcement and education fronts, designed to reduce serious injuries and deaths on Redwood City roads.

"This funding will strengthen our commitment to public safety in our community," said Kristina Bell, the police chief. "We will be able to increase our efforts in making our roads safer for everyone and focus on critical areas such as distracted driving, impaired driving and speeding."

The department will use the money to fund DUI checkpoints and patrols, along with high-visibility distracted driving enforcement operations. Other programs will target dangerous driving behaviors and top violations linked to crashes, including speeding, failure to yield and improper lane changes.

The money will also fund community presentations on traffic safety issues, collaborations with neighboring agencies, and officer training and recertification programs for field sobriety tests and drug recognition.
