SMC Offers Repair Vouchers To Drivers Pulled Over For Broken Lights

Under a new partnership, deputies will provide vouchers instead of citations to drivers who are pulled over for having broken lights.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office has announced a new partnership with an award-winning program that provides repair vouchers for drivers who are pulled over for having broken or malfunctioning lighting equipment.

According to the sheriff's office, "Light's On!" is a national effort created to build trust between communities and law enforcement while reducing financial burdens that can lead to a "downward spiral" when costly citations add to existing strains.

The partnership gives deputies the ability to issue a voucher instead of a ticket during traffic stops for broken headlights, taillights, brake lights, or turn signals. Drivers can redeem the vouchers at participating auto shops, covering up to $250 to replace the light.

"The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office is committed to finding meaningful ways to have positive interactions with those we serve," said Sheriff Christina Corpus. "Lights On! is an innovative approach to demonstrating compassion and understanding for those who may need assistance to fix a minor vehicle code violation. This program is a win for all — it creates safer streets and encourages positive relationships between law enforcement and the public."

The sheriff's office is among the first Bay Area law enforcement agencies to adopt the program, joined by the Petaluma Police Department, which announced the same partnership Monday.
