SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — Two more names are joining the race to replace Rep. Jackie Speier (D-San Mateo), who announced last week that she will not seek re-election to Congress in 2022.

Burlingame City Councilmember Emily Beach and Assembly Speaker pro Tempore Kevin Mullin (D-South San Francisco) announced their candidacies this week, joining San Mateo County Board of Supervisors President David Canepa in the race for what is expected to be a contested seat amongst Democrats in a heavily blue district.

Beach has been on the Burlingame City Council since 2015 and was re-elected in 2019. She served as mayor in 2020 and is also the chair of the San Mateo County Transportation Authority Board of Directors.

“I'm ready to fight for environmental protections, immigrant rights, early child ed, mental health, reproductive freedom, higher wages, and a more fair and collaborative economy,” Beach said in a tweet.

She also touted her experience as a “veteran, mom of teens, environment champion, business exec & pandemic Mayor.”

Mullin, who served as an aide to Speier before getting his start on the South San Francisco City Council, has been in the state Assembly since 2012.

In a video announcing his candidacy in front of his South San Francisco home, Mullin pledged to address climate change, the affordable housing crisis and voting rights.

“I learned a few things from Jackie Speier," Mullin said. "First, it’s a privilege to serve. Second, either courage is something in your nature or just something on a bumper sticker.”

Speier's Congressional district, the 14th District, covers most of San Mateo County and part of San Francisco. She has held the seat since 2008.
