Fatal Double Shooting Prompts Apartment Building Evacuation In Santa Rosa: Police

SANTA ROSA, CA — Two people were found dead in a Santa Rosa apartment Wednesday afternoon after officers responded to a call about a possible domestic violence case there, police said.

A call came in around 2:40 p.m. Wednesday about possible domestic violence taking place at an apartment in the 1500 block of Atlanta Court. Santa Rosa police said the caller was not at the residence but had received information via telephone about a problem there.

Officers responded but were unable to make contact with anyone inside the apartment, and they learned that several gunshots were heard about 20 minutes before the arrival of police to the four-unit building.

As a precaution, police evacuated the other three units in the building and continued to try to contact people inside the apartment. Then at about 4:30 p.m., a SWAT team entered and found a man and woman dead in a bedroom from apparent gunshot wounds.

Investigators determined the man and woman were both 24 years old and had recently moved to Santa Rosa from Southern California. Police said the woman had multiple gunshot wounds from an assault rifle and the man had at least one gunshot from the same firearm.

According to police, investigators are still looking into the relationship between the man and woman but believe the case involved only the two of them inside the apartment. Autopsies on the pair were expected to be complete Thursday and their names were not immediately available.

Police recovered four firearms — two pistols, an assault rifle and a shotgun — at the apartment and the guns were determined to be owned by the man who died.
