SANTA ROSA, CA — Police arrested four men on the shoulder of a Highway 12 off-ramp after a chase caught on camera from the air that wove through Santa Rosa traffic.

The incident began on Friday when the Sonoma County sheriff’s Henry-1 helicopter spotted the vehicle trying to flee from Santa Rosa police at about 4:50 p.m. on Santa Rosa Avenue near Highway 12, according to a news release from the Santa Rosa Police Department.

The car drove off, trying to blend in with traffic as the helicopter followed, then passed other cars on the shoulder of the freeway. The car wove through Santa Rosa roadways from Holland Drive to Cypress Way before turning south on Bennett Valley Road and then Westbound Highway 12, going 75 m.p.h. as the helicopter and then the Santa Rosa police pursued the car.

The vehicle hit a guardrail on Southbound Highway 101 and finally stopped on the shoulder of the Baker Avenue off-ramp. During the stop, the thermal imaging system on Henry-1 showed a passenger throwing an object from the vehicle. Deputies from the air directed police to the item, which they identified as a cellphone.

Inside the vehicle, deputies located a large amount of suspected stolen mail. The driver and three passengers were arrested and booked into the Sonoma County Jail.
