Military Banner Program Gaining Traction

Other North Bay cities asking about the program and how to replicate it.

Longtime Rohnert Park resident Andy Durkee didn't think his idea to install commemorative banners honoring local soldiers would gain as much widespread acceptance as it has.

Since his idea first budded two years ago — inspired by a similar Armed Forces tribute program in the Southern California town of Rancho Cucamonga — Durkee's program has become reality. The first 10 banners were installed at City Center Plaza this April.

And now, other Northern California towns are paying attention. City officials from Windsor and Cotati have contacted Durkee, himself a veteran, about how he got the program started — first bringing a proposal to the Parks and Recreation Department, then the City Council as a pilot program.

Durkee is presenting the program to the City Council, in hopes of making it permanent, in July.

What do you think about the Armed Forces banners posted outside the library and Department of Public Safety? Have you noticed?
