Petaluma Man Charged In Crash Death Of Rohnert Park Woman

Lourdes Oscanoa-Marcelo, 47, died three days after the U.S. 101 crash. Francisco Gonzalez-Mejia, 20, faces charges of DUI and manslaughter.

SONOMA COUNTY, CA β€” A Rohnert Park woman who was ejected during a vehicle collision north of Santa Rosa earlier this month died last week at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. Lourdes Oscanoa-Marcelo, 47, was not wearing a seatbelt in the Toyota Corolla she was riding in when it was struck by a Mercedes-Benz on northbound U.S. Highway 101 at Airport Boulevard on June 16, according to the California Highway Patrol.

She died at the hospital three days later.

The Mercedes driver, Francisco Javier Gonzalez-Mejia, 20, of Petaluma, fled the scene, CHP Officer Jon Sloat said.

Gonzalez-Mejia called his girlfriend for a ride, and he was arrested when she arrived to pick him up on Fulton Road near Airport Boulevard, Sloat said.

The Toyota driver, Elvis Veliz, 46, of Rohnert Park, suffered major life-threatening injuries and was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, Sloat said.

The Sonoma County District Attorney's Office charged Gonzalez-Mejia with felony gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, DUI with a blood-alcohol level of 0.20 percent or more, DUI causing great
bodily injury or death and hit-and-run causing death.

Gonzalez-Mejia is scheduled to enter a plea in Sonoma County Superior Court on July 6.
