The Santa Rosa Police Department identified the postal worker as Irvin Hernandez, a 33-year-old resident of Santa Rosa.
The other driver was still inside his car. He was conscious and appeared to be having a medical emergency, police said.
Authorities shut down the roadway for several hours as accident investigators, evidence technicians and the U.S. Postal Service investigated the fatal crash.
Based on witness statements and surveillance video from homes in the area, police said the man in the SUV appeared to be driving erratically just before the crash. He struck the postal vehicle and the driver, who was standing outside sorting mail.
The preliminary investigation showed the SUV driver suffered a medical emergency which caused him to lose control of his car, police said. He suffered minor injuries in the crash and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment.
Police asked anyone with information about the investigation to call Officer John Fisher at 707-543-3600, ext. 8550.
