One other driver was arrested on suspicion of possession of controlled substances and drug paraphernalia and for carrying a loaded and concealed firearm.

DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on reported incidents of impaired driving-related crashes, Medeiros said.

"The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off roads," he said.

The checkpoint was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
