Santa Rosa Man Killed In Wrong-Way Crash On 101 In Rohnert Park

A San Diego man is accused of felony DUI and homicide in the crash that claimed a 23-year-old man's life.

ROHNERT PARK, CA — A Santa Rosa man was killed in a wrong-way crash early Friday on U.S. Highway 101 in Rohnert Park, the California Highway Patrol said.

Around 4:45 a.m., the CHP Santa Rosa Office was notified that a car was traveling northbound on southbound U.S. 101 near Rohnert Park Expressway. Three minutes later, a head-on collision was reported on southbound U.S. 101 at Golf Course Drive.

The CHP's preliminary investigation indicated the wrong-way driver, David Stubbers, 26, of San Diego, was driving a Ford Edge northbound in the right southbound lane when he collided head-on with a Mazda 3 traveling in the right southbound lane, CHP Officer David deRutte said.

"Prior to the release of this press release, CHP has just been informed that the driver of the Mazda passed away at the hospital," deRutte said.

The Sonoma County Sheriff-Coroner's Office identified the driver as Guadelupe Sanchez Castellanos, a 23-year-old Santa Rosa man.

The right lane of U.S. 101 southbound and the Golf Course Drive exit in Rohnert Park were blocked for nearly three hours as the incident was investigated.

There were no passengers in either vehicle and no other cars were involved, deRutte said.

"It was determined Stubbers was under the influence and he was arrested for Felony DUI," deRutte said. "Stubbers was released by the hospital staff and later booked into the Sonoma County Jail."

Stubbers was being held without bail Friday afternoon on suspicion of first-degree homicide, gross vehicular manslaughter and felony DUI, jail records showed. He is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday afternoon.
