School Lunch Memories: Are Yours Made up of Cardboard Pizza and Mystery Meat?

We're seeking your stories this week to bring a little humor and reminiscence to our series on school nutrition that we've been working on. Share your stories in the comments below!

School cafeterias have come a long way since the days of mystery meat, cardboard pizza and sugary fruit cocktail — today, the U.S. Department of Agruciulture regulates what's being fed to kids — and recently the National School Lunch Program adopted stricter requirements for incorporating more fruits and veggies into schools across the country.

Sure, there's less sugary sodas offered and more fresh produce available, but tomato paste still counts as a serving of vegetables and pre-made commodity foods like frozen chicken patties and burgers are still heavily subsidized by the government — making them more affordable for school districts who continuously fight budget cuts.

We're continuing our series of stories looking at where the food in Cotati-Rohnert Park comes from, and we're making great headway. Here, we're asking you, what are your memories of school lunch as a kid?
